 Hunting Safety Tips

Hunting season is here, a time when people of all ages don blaze orange and head out to the woods to bag that elusive buck or doe. There are some things to consider when heading out to the woods.

Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine has some tips on their website if you are bringing a pet out with you on the hunt:

  • Outfit your pet with blaze orange or other bright clothing
  • Don’t let your pet off-leash
  • Don’t allow your pet to chase deer
  • Don’t let your pet eat carcasses
  • Consider your pet’s feelings in regards to loud noises or gun shots

The “Trophy Deer Hunting Secrets” website has some invaluable tips for hunters:

  • Practice gun safety
  • Be sure of your target
  • Be safe in your tree stand
  • Use hunter or blaze orange clothing
  • Never hunt alone

The IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association) has tips for mountain bikers that want to hit the trails during hunting season as well:

  • Wear blaze orange or bright colors while biking
  • Avoid earth tone colors & definitely the color white
  • Don’t ride during dawn or dusk when deer & hunters are most active
  • When riding, make yourself known by talking or ringing a bell
  • Check with the local land managers for closed trails during hunting season
