Marriage & Insurance – Your Agent or Mine?

Marriage & Insurance – Your Agent or Mine?

Actually this checklist should have been done prior to the big day. Marriage is the combining of two lives into one, not only spiritually & emotionally but also financially as well. There are things to consider when it comes to insurance for newlyweds and hopefully this checklist will help:

  1. Your agent or mine? Hopefully parents have gotten their children involved in the financial/insurance process when they have come of age. Preparing our young people for what lies ahead for them as independent individuals is important to hopefully keep them from making financial mistakes that could cost them in the long-run. We recommend the newlyweds sit down with each other’s  insurance agent to get quotes on combining auto policies and any additional policies the agents may recommend. Get a feel for the agent, is he/she knowledgeable about their field? Do they make suggestions for additional coverage that may benefit your situation? Are they easy to talk to or intimidating?
  2. Coverage Limits. It’s possible that the spouse-to-be may have different coverage limits than their partner. Both insurance agents should be able to compare limits and make recommendations for increases/reductions in coverage.
  3. Bundle/Unbundle. Is it more economical to have all your insurance with one carrier or to split it out amongst different carriers? Both agents should be able to present multiple quotes based on bundling/unbundling (if the agents are independent agents). It could happen that having separate auto policies may be more financially beneficial than having both on one policy (especially true if either one of the partners has tickets or accidents).
  4. Ease of Doing Business. Are the agents or companies easy to get ahold of in case of a policy change or claim? Some agents refer clients to company claim numbers or customer service centers for policy changes rather than process them in-house. Depending on your lifestyle, this could be a good fit or not a good fit.
  5. Discounts. What different discounts are available for each carrier? How can the discounts be maximized?
