Amusement Park Safety

Amusement Park Safety

All this month we will be sharing tips on how to be safe while enjoying many outdoor activities this summer!

The blog Safewise has an article with tips on how to be safe while visiting amusement parks this Summer. Some things cannot be avoided like the recent roller coaster stop at Michigan’s Adventure, but other hazards & potential health issues can be avoided by following these simple tips:

  • The Sun – Nothing can ruin fun faster than a severe sunburn. Make sure to apply sunscreen before heading to the park and apply it at least every 2 hours while at the park (more often if you’re at a water park). Follow directions and throw away sunscreen past the “use by” date.
  • Hydrate & Fuel Up – Amongst the fun of an amusement park, we often neglect the simple things like staying hydrated and eating. Dehydration can cause headaches, upset stomach, & lethargy which can be a dangerous combination in the hot sun on hot asphalt. Keep pumping fluids and eating small snacks throughout the day.
  • Off-Limits – There’s a reason for the signs stating areas are off-limits. They are there for your protection. Don’t sneak through off-limits areas, it’s just not worth it.
  • You Body Talks – It does! Listen to your body throughout the day and rest when needed. Often we get so wrapped up in trying to do/see everything that we push our bodies to the limit.
  • Don’t Be Silent – If you see a safety hazard or have a concern, talk to a park employee. They cannot resolve a safety issue if they aren’t aware of it.
  • What You Wear – Loose & baggy items, jewelry, free-flowing hair, all of these things could cause harm to yourself and others at the amusement park. Wear comfortable layered clothing (so you can add/remove as the weather dictates), broken-in closed-toe shoes, & leave the baggy stuff at home.
  • Know Your Limits – Most amusement parks have information both online and at the park regarding their rides. They spell out the health risks and restrictions for each ride. Be safe when you ride.
  • Rules, Rules – Rules are there not to be broken, but rather to keep you safe and help you and your family enjoy a day at the amusement park.
  • Have a Plan – Before you even leave, have a plan of action. Make sure all members understand where you are going and what to do when you get separated. Nothing ruins a fun day at the park more than having to search around for lost party members.
  • The Buddy System – This isn’t just a good idea for elementary school field trips. It’s always best to go to an amusement park with at least one other person. This way you can check on each other’s well-being and to have someone there in case something does happen.

Hiking Safety

Hiking Safety

All this month we will be sharing tips on how to be safe while enjoying many outdoor activities this summer!

Exploring the outdoors is a wonderful pastime for the Summer months. Just about anywhere you live there are trails or nature paths to check out. There are safety concerns to take under advisement if you are hiking locally or around the world. The appropriately-named Hiking Beginner website has tips for those of us interested in hiking around nature this Summer, many of which mimic those we learned about with the Hunting Safety & Snowmobile Safety podcasts:

  • Don’t Hike Alone – always have someone else (or several) with you when you go hiking. First aid, climbing help, lessening panic, having another person with you can be invaluable.
  • Have a Plan – use well-marked paths or trails to avoid the possibility of getting lost. Though they may not be as “exciting” as charging your own path, it’s much safer that getting lost in the middle of nowhere.
  • Basic Necessities – matches, a “proper” survival knife (one with useful tools), & first aid kit should be in your pack, as well as bottled water/sports drinks & snacks enough for the intended hike.
  • Use Your Noggin – common sense is essential when hiking, don’t get too carried away in the excitement and certainly don’t test limits.

The National Park Service also has a page filled with tips on being safe when hiking. Be safe when enjoying the outdoors this Summer!

Bicycle Safety

Bicycle Safety

All this month we will be sharing tips on how to be safe while enjoying many outdoor activities this summer!

More and more people are finding bicycling the go-to activity of choice during the Spring & Summer months. Exercise, fresh air, sunshine are all benefits from getting on your two-wheeler and hitting the paths or trails. The folks over at SafeKids Worldwide have an article on being safe while riding your bike (or trike!):

  • Wear a Helmet – make sure it is a proper fit (snug not tight!) and does not interfere with your ability to see in front of you or to the sides
  • Bike Fit – having the proper bike is important for both safety and comfort. When it comes to kids, purchase a bike that fits them now – not one they can “grow into”.
  • Dress Appropriately – loose clothing can get caught in the chain/spokes, secure loose clothing (like pant legs) if necessary.
  • Ride with Traffic – always remember that riders are to remain on the right side of the road going in the same direction flow as traffic. Never ride against traffic.
  • Use Hand Signals – we posted this video on our agency Facebook page that shows the proper hand signals to use while bicycling.
  • Be Bright at Night – use proper lights, reflectors, & clothing if you are going to ride at dusk or at night. Be visible to motorists & other cyclists.

The article has several other tips, check it out and be safe!

Beach Safety

Beach Safety

All this month we will be sharing tips on how to be safe while enjoying many outdoor activities this summer!

Summer is peeking around the corner and many people are heading to the beach. This week we wanted to share tips on how to be safe while enjoying the sun & sand!

The Red Cross has tips on what to do when faced with being caught in a rip current:

– Stay calm, don’t fight the current
– Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current
– If you are able, turn and swim to shore
– If you are unable, draw attention by yelling & waving

They also offer other beach safety tips such as:

– Young children & inexperienced swimmers should wear US Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Other types of flotation devices should be used by experienced swimmers only.

– Don’t dive into unknown water headfirst, always protect your neck. Jump in feet first to begin with until you know the depth and have an idea of what obstructions there are.

– Keep an eye on children and elderly persons, even in shallow water.

– Watch out for aquatic life, steer clear of patches of plants and DO NOT touch any animals you come across.

The city of Holland has implemented a new program to let people know when it’s safe to enter the water, check out the video here.
